Free Crochet Pattern Bobble Letter A

A lot of followers of my blog ask me to make English patterns.

This is my first translation of one of my free patterns.

Today you get the first free bobble letter crochet pattern.

Letter a

The first free bobble letter is an 'a'.

This is the first letter of the alphabet.

Is this the first letter of the text we are making?
No, it is the first vowel in the text.

Start with the color you like best for the vowels.

The consonants get color 2 and we crochet the special one in color 3.

Material

For 1 letter:

25 grams Phildar Coton 3 cotton

Crochet hook size 3.0 mm (or 2.5 mm)

Darning needle

Stitch marker or paperclip

Canvas 10 x 10 cm

Scissors

Tension:

You can use another brand or cotton yarn, but this can lead to other formats.

After round 3 measure on the canvas if you get the right size: between 10 and 11 cm wide.

If necessary, use a different size crochet hook.

Abbreviations US terms

ch = chain

t-ch = turning chain; this does not count as a stitch

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

cl = cluster stitch or bobble stitch

st = stitch

 2 sc tog = crochet 2 singles crochets together

How to make a Cluster Stitch or Bobble Stitch

* yarn around the hook, insert the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch

on the previous row, yarn around the hook, 

pull the yarn through the stitch, giving you 3 loops on your crochet hook, yarn over and draw the yarn through just the first 2 loops on the hook, 

The 2 loops on your hook will stay there untill later*. 

You have now started a dc, but did not finished the stitch. 

Repeat from * to * 4 times more. 

You now have six loops on your crochet hook.

Yarn over again and draw the yarn through all 6 loops on the hook.

In the pattern you make after each cluster a single crochet. 

Hold the crochet hook in the front of the cluster sting. 

Ans push the cluster stitch away from you to the front of your work . 

In this way you can make the single crochet easier and you get a nice bobble at the front. 

Crochet this single crochet a little bit tighter then your other single crochets.

It keeps the cluster nicely in place.

If you turn yourcrochet work, you will see the bobble in the front.

Note

In the middle of this pattern you can find a scheme. 

Each square represents a stitch.

Each white square is 1 sc, each colored square is 1 cl. 

Read the schema from bottom to top. 

You hook clusters only in the even rows. 

Then you are working at the backside of your work

and you push the bobbles away from you to the front of your work. 

Net everyone needs to crochet rounds 26 and 27.

If your work measures between 10 and 11 cm on each side after round 25,

Than you don't need rounds 26 - 27.

Work Description

Crochet ch 27 (not too tight!).

Round 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 

Work 1 sc in each next ch, 1 t-ch (does not count as st) (26)

Each row below has 26 stitches. Turn to the other side.

Round 2: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-ch. Turn.

Round 3: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-ch. Turn.

Now measure the crocheted piece on the canvas. 

The strip should fit nicely on the front of the canvas.

It should not stabbing too much over the edge.

There will be a crochet edge along the square.

That must connect tight on the canvas. 

Your work should measure between 10 and 11 cm wide.

Is your work too large for the front of the canvas?  

Then you work is not tight enough. 

Crochet again with a smaller crochet hook (2.5mm)

Make sure this time is slightly firmer.

Is the strip is too small for the front of the canvas? 

Then you crochet too tight. 

Start again. 

Make sure you crochet lnot so tight this time. 

Use a hook 3.5mm.

Round  4: 9 sc, 4x (1 cl, 1 sc), 2 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 5: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 6: 7 sc, 1 cl, 9 sc, 2x (1 cl, 1 sc), 5 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 7: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 8: 5 sc, 1 cl, 13 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 9: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 10: 5 sc, 1 cl, 13 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 11: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 12: 5 sc, 1 cl, 13 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 13: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 14: 5 sc, 1 cl, 13 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 15: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 16: 5 sc, 1 cl, 13 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 17: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 18: 7 sc, 1 cl, 9 sc, 2x (1 cl, 1 sc), 5 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 19: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 20: 9 sc, 4x (1 cl, 1 sc), 2 sc, 1 cl, 6 sc, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 21-24: 1 sc in each stitch, 1 t-sc, turn

Round. 25: 1 sc in each stitch

Now measure your work on the square canvas. 

Your work must fit nicely on the flat front of the canvas. 

It may protrude a little bit over the edge.

Also make sure the patch is exactly square.

Not smaller than 10 cm by 10 cm or bigger than 11 to 11 cm.

Fits the work well and is it square?

- Yes, the work fits and it is a square!

Continue with the sides (see description below).

Don't cut the yarn, but continue.

From now on don't turn your work anymore.

Crochet around the sides of the square.

See the description below after the scheme.

- No, the work is not a square and is no long enough!

Then continue to crochet as follows:

Round. 26: 1 t-ch, turn your work, 1 sc in each st, 1 t-ch, turn.

Round. 27: 1 sc in each stitch, NO t-ch, Do not turn anymore.

Now crochet around the edge. Please see the description below after the scheme.

The sides of the edge

Insert in the last stitch of the last row a stitchmarker. 

Move it after each next round.

From now on crochet round the square.

Do not you turn your work anymore. 

Round 1: Crochet along each side 26 v.

The last sc of one side in the corner.

Crochet in this stitch also the first sc on the next side.  

End of this round is 1 sc in the stitch with the stitchmarker.

Round 2: crochet round the square:

side 1: 2 sc in the first stitch (=  1e corner), 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc,

side 2: 2 sc in the next stitch (= 2e corner), 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc,

side 3: 2 sc in the next stitch (= 3e corner), 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc,

side 4: 2 sc in the next stitch (= 4th corner), 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 sc, 2 sc tog, 7 v

Round 3: 1 sc in each stitch, but crochet in the middle of each side 2 sc tog.

Try after each round if you crocheted work fits the canvas.

If necessary adjust the amount of rounds.

Round 4-6: 1 sc in each stitch and in each corner 2 dc tog. 

Fasten of, leaving long tail for sewing.

Pull your work on the canvas.

Make sure the rows are showing straight lines and your work cover the corners neatly.

Sew the yarn at the back of the canvas through the front loops of the stitches.

Gently pull the wire to close your work neatly around the canvas. 

Weave in the end.

Ready is the first bobble letter.
